Who are we?

Rev. Alma:

Hello! I’m Alma, the Rector of the Parish of the Ascension, Hulme. Or, if you want to be formal, or send me a letter, I’m the Reverend Canon Alma Servant!

My address is: The Rectory, Royce Road, Hulme, Manchester, M15 5EA

I have been here at the Ascension since 2000. As parish priest prior to that, I was at St. Thomas’ Church, Heaton Chapel from 1996 – 2000, and at the Metropolitan University from 1988 - 1996. So Manchester has been a considerable part of my life, and I like it here.

Besides being parish priest, I work with people who are seeking to be ordained in the Church of England, both as a selector and an Examining Chaplain. I do some work with the police, and take part in many activities across the Deanery of Hulme and the Diocese of Manchester.

Before ordination, I read philosophy at the University of Nottingham and qualified as a librarian in London. After working in Nottingham Central Library, I trained for ordination in Cambridge, and still have connections there.

Church-wise, I’ve been a lay reader for five years – a deaconess for two, a deacon for seven years, (I was one of the first women to be ordained deacon in 1987, and one of the first women to be ordained priest in 1994.) and a priest for eighteen years. I think I am going to like it!

I love travel, books, (almost) all kinds of music, good films and fine art.

That’s enough about me – an outline only, just to introduce myself.
